About the city
Porto-Vecchio is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department of France on the island of Corsica. It is the chief commune of the canton of Porto-Vecchio, which it shares with Sari-Solenzara, Conca and Lecci. Port-Vecchio is a medium-sized port city placed on a good harbor, the southernmost of the marshy and alluvial east side of Corsica.
City areas
There are many places around town where you can sit and enjoy the scenery or even take a nice relaxing stroll. If you get tired of walking you can always stop at one of the terraces around town and enjoy a cold drink, especially in summer.
Attractions
Porto Vecchio has a lot of things to offer. There are many landmarks around town that demand at least a visit. One of the main attractions is the town hall as well as the famous Chiappa Lighthouse, one of the 5 lighthouses built in the 19th century to make sailing around the island much safer.
Transportation
The most practical way to get to Porto Vecchio is to take a plane to Figari airport, found 20 km from the town, and then take a bus or a train. Another way to get there is drive to the Italian coast and then take a ferry.
Events
The town of Porto Vecchio is not very popular with events, however there is one event that merits participation. Porto Vecchio Week is a chance for locals to show off there cultural heritage through parades, stage performances and expositions of local art.
Restaurants & Nightlife
The town has dozens of excellent restaurants, some with beautiful views over the harbor, and a main square where you can sip your latte or try one of the special local desserts, while people watching.
History & Civilisation
Porto Vecchio has been a human habitat since the Bronze Age. The Romans had a settlement in the area as well, but it was abandoned due to problems with malaria.
La Chiappa Lighthouse
The lighthouse is located on Chiappa Point, the south side of the entrance to the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio, at the end of Route du Phare about 5 km northeast of Piccuvaghjia. The site is always open, however the lighthouse tower is closed to the public.
